100 Virtues for Family Life

Recognize the good. Name it. Practice it. Help it grow.

Virtues are the qualities of character that help us become our best selves. Courage helps us face what is difficult. Compassion moves us to care. Honesty guides us to tell the truth, and perseverance helps us continue when something is challenging.

Every person possesses the potential to practice these qualities. Some virtues come naturally, while others require attention, encouragement, and experience to develop.

As parents and caregivers, we help children strengthen their character when we notice virtues in action, name them clearly, and create opportunities to practice them.

Instead of simply saying, “Good job,” we can be specific:

  • “I saw your kindness when you invited her to play.”
  • “You showed perseverance when you tried again.”
  • “I appreciate your honesty in telling me what happened.”
  • “You practiced responsibility when you remembered your assignment.”

This is the language of virtues: recognizing the quality and connecting it to the behavior that demonstrated it.

Choose a Virtue

Explore the virtues below and choose one that speaks to your family’s needs today.

As you reflect, consider:

  • Where is this virtue already present in our family?
  • Who has demonstrated it recently?
  • When is this virtue most difficult for us to practice?
  • What would it look or sound like in daily family life?
  • How can we acknowledge it when we see it?
  • What is one opportunity to practice it this week?

There is no need to work on every virtue at once. Choose one, talk about what it means, notice it in action, and practice it together.

This collection is inspired by the work of The Virtues Project™. The family reflections and practice statements presented here are Joseph Michael’s original educational content.
